SUMMARY:Indigenous Women: Border Matters
DESCRIPTION:10:am – 4:00 pm* \n\nWheelwright Museum of the American Indian\n \nIndigenous Women: Border Matters features a timely look at four Indigenous women artists who speak to issues on both sides of the U.S. border. Their practice is guided by contemporary issues of identity\, self-determination\, human rights\, and the impacts on the human experience. The works explore and question how Indigenous women interact with the land we inhabit. The layering of symbolism\, meaning\, deconstructing concepts\, including memory\, cultural heritage\, and politics\, form the basis of the exhibition by artists Makaye Lewis (Tohono O’odham)\, Daisy Quezada Ureña (Mexican-American)\, M. Jenea Sanchez (Latinx)\, and Gabriela Muñoz (Latinx).  Makaye Lewis states\, “As a Tohono O’odham citizen\, my art stems from environmental influences and my culture. I come from a Tribal nation on the border\, and we never experienced removal from our traditional lands. I am comforted knowing that I am where I am meant to be. Still\, I find discomfort in knowing the many issues that arise when an imaginary political line leaves half my reservation in the United States and half in Mexico.” The Wheelwright Museum & shop are open Tuesday – Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed Sunday and Monday. SUMMARY:Shonto Begay: Eyes of the World
DESCRIPTION:10:am – 4:00 pm* \n\nWheelwright Museum of the American Indian\n \nShonto Begay: Eyes of the World features the work of Navajo Neo-Impressionist artist Shonto Begay. Autobiographical in nature\, his paintings visually narrate his connection to the Navajo landscape\, personal histories\, and cosmology. Shonto’s voice resonates throughout the exhibition\, poetically complimenting individual artworks with in-depth storytelling and reflections on life\, furthering the viewer’s understanding of art as an activity that creates objects of healing\, beauty\, and peace in a troubled world.  A well-known figure in his community\, Shonto advocates for environmental awareness and indigenous perspectives through participation in local poetry readings\, engagement in youth mural projects\, and storytelling.  This exhibition is curated by Zachary Miller\, M.F.A. DESCRIPTION:IAIA 2020/2021 BFA Exhibition: Manifesting Our Destinies\n \n\n10:00 am – 5:00 pm* \n\nIAIA Museum of Contemporary Native American Art \nCo-curated by Joseph Maldonado (Tlingit and Ottawa) and Ethan Swearengin (Cherokee Nation)\, Manifesting Our Destinies highlights artwork that reflects the diverse backgrounds of this year’s IAIA graduating BFA students. The juried show presents the unique voices of emerging artists that share an interest in themes such as resiliency\, self-empowerment\, and societal acceptance. The artworks reflect how these artists have redefined their cultural heritage by blending contemporary art forms\, techniques and materials with traditional Native art influences.
