The Fashion Show will feature new collections by Indigenous designers Delina White (Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe) of I Am Anishinaabe, Yolanda Skelton (Gitxsan Nation) and Loren (Acoma Pueblo) and Valentina (Navajo) Aragon of ACONAV. More than 50 models will represent Supernaturals Modelling Agency. The Coe’s curator, Bess Murphy, will have a variety of small art projects for event-goers to engage with, including the opportunity to participate in mural making. Ken began his career at an early age, experimenting as a self taught artist who learned by observing family and friends. He completed his BA in museum studies at the Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe (2007) and while there took beadwork classes from noted beadwork artist Teri Greeves. Since 2003 he has been participating in the Southwest Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA) Annual Indian Market, Santa Fe and since 2006 at the Heard Museum Annual Indian Market and Festival, Phoenix. William’s work has been widely exhibited and garnered many awards. Then, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm jeweler Sonwai (Hopi) will be featured with her work. Sonwai is the artistic name used by Verma Nequatewa. Verma began working with her uncle, the late Charles Loloma, in the mid-1960's and continued working with him until his studio closed in the early 1990's. At that time, she opened her own studio and has been continuing his teachings through her own jewelry.

Patrick Dean Hubbell: A New Day brings together a selection of the artist’s most recent works. The work, a continuation of a series developed by the artist over the last two years explores methods of painting and display, reflecting ideas of identity and categorization, and question issues of mass cultural appropriation. Patrick Dean Hubbell, originally from Navajo, NM, is Dine' (Navajo). He is To'ahani'(Near to Water Clan), Born for Dibe'lizhini (Black Sheep). Hubbell earned his BFA from Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ, and recently earned an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Charlie Willeto was a Navajo artist born in 1897. In the Navajo clan system, his maternal clan was Tódich’ii’ni (Bitter Water) born for his paternal clan, Hashtłishnii (Mud People). Willeto’s father was a medicine man or as Navajos call them “hatałii”, which translates as “singer.” His mother was also a medicine woman. They instilled Navajo healing ways in their son, and he assumed this responsibility for his greater community. Being a hatałii, Willeto traveled throughout the Navajo Nation healing those in need with traditional ceremonies and prayer. Charlie married Elizabeth, who was a Navajo weaver and the daughter of a hatałii, and born into traditional Navajo healing arts. They had six children and lived in a traditional Navajo hogan between Lybrook and Nageezi, New Mexico. Willeto supported his family by working in many different jobs, including railroad worker, silversmith, moccasin maker, and later in life as a renowned woodcarver. Contemporary Navajo artist Shonto Begay said, “Willeto beckoned me to celebrate the unheralded visions of my world, including the pain, we as Diné collectively deny so effectively. Shonto Begay: Eyes of the World features the work of Navajo Neo-Impressionist artist Shonto Begay. Autobiographical in nature, his paintings visually narrate his connection to the Navajo landscape, personal histories, and cosmology. Shonto’s voice resonates throughout the exhibition, poetically complimenting individual artworks with in-depth storytelling and reflections on life, furthering the viewer’s understanding of art as an activity that creates objects of healing, beauty, and peace in a troubled world. A well-known figure in his community, Shonto advocates for environmental awareness and indigenous perspectives through participation in local poetry readings, engagement in youth mural projects, and storytelling. This exhibition is curated by Zachary Miller, M.F.A. Indigenous Women: Border Matters features a timely look at four Indigenous women artists who speak to issues on both sides of the U.S. border. Their practice is guided by contemporary issues of identity, self-determination, human rights, and the impacts on the human experience. The works explore and question how Indigenous women interact with the land we inhabit. The layering of symbolism, meaning, deconstructing concepts, including memory, cultural heritage, and politics, form the basis of the exhibition by artists Makaye Lewis (Tohono O’odham), Daisy Quezada Ureña (Mexican-American), M. Jenea Sanchez (Latinx), and Gabriela Muñoz (Latinx). Makaye Lewis states, “As a Tohono O’odham citizen, my art stems from environmental influences and my culture. I come from a Tribal nation on the border, and we never experienced removal from our traditional lands. I am comforted knowing that I am where I am meant to be. The juried show presents the unique voices of emerging artists that share an interest in themes such as resiliency, self-empowerment, and societal acceptance. The artworks reflect how these artists have redefined their cultural heritage by blending contemporary art forms, techniques and materials with traditional Native art influences. The exhibit consists of jewelry collected by Dr. Harry P. Mera during a trip to the Navajo Nation in the fall of 1932. Funded primarily by John D. Rockefeller, Mera visited 80 trading posts and covered more than 2,500 miles to gather a collection of jewelry made in the prior 40 years. The pieces, outstanding in their craftsmanship and artistry, were handmade from silver coins or ingots of silver before the general availability of advanced mechanical tools and commercial commodities. These works shed light on the importance of silver to the Navajo people of the time, and form the inspiration of the jewelry artists that have followed. *The Museum of Indian Arts & Culture is open Mon-Sun 10am - 5pm. "I have always considered Pueblo pottery to be an essential ingredient in my life," said Wall. "Over the last thirty years, I have begun my creative process with the same actions as my mother, my grandmother, and my great grandmother before her. I dig clay and volcanic ash in the same places that my mother showed me as a young girl. Aug 12-22, 2021Doug Coffin and Doug Black Ellsworth Gallery At the core of D1 & D2... rests the personal and creative bond between both artists. It is no coincidence the two have the same first name, as Doug Black is named after Doug Coffin, his godfather. Both originating from Lawrence, KS, Coffin & Black have fostered a decades-long relationship leading up to this show. Throughout the years, artistic harmony grew. When Doug Black began to cultivate his now 30-year stay and career overseas in Japan, Coffin began looking east for inspiration, incorporating calligraphy and Japanese symbolism into his own work. Sometime after, as the two would exchange images of their work, Coffin began to note that he was seeing his own artistic sensibility in his godson, that a real sense of influence was flowing between the both of them thousands of miles away. After Black made a visit to Santa Fe from Japan to see Coffin's previous exhibition with Ellsworth Gallery, Full Circle: From Far East to Southwest, they began to imagine their work collectively in the space. ...Re-Connection was born. Featuring works of Coffin's signature glass-sphere acrylic paintings, large-scale sculpture, and Black's expressive ceramics, D1 & D2 gaze down at the earth and up at the sky in awe of the beauty of life's mysteries. Figures and patterns emerge,—from the past, the future, and the instinctive breathe of our dreams—moving towards a welcoming, contemplative center.
